Things to do with the family

Interested in fun and relatively inexpensive things to do with the family in the City? Well here are some popular ideas, brought to you by the community:


  • Fly a kite
  • ball games
  • Collect shells along the beach and then ‘giving them back’ to the sea at the end of your adventures
  • Swimming, boogie boarding 

Parks and reserves

Find a park near you

  • Get the kids, parents, aunties and uncles together and head along to the FREE parkrun on Saturday mornings – be as competitive as you like by running or walking the 5km course and then finish it off with breakfast at the beach! More info at
  • Get creative (or get messy) with clay, sand or dirt. Bring your own play things (e.g. pet dinosaurs) or use what’s there!
  • Have a kick of the footy at the park – try your best Eddie Betts or Sarah Perkins impersonations and perfect your stylish skills!
  • Warm up by playing chasey or hide-n-seek at your local park.
  • For larger groups, ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’, ‘Capture the Flag’ and ‘Red Rover, Red Rover’ are also popular games
  • Have a friendly game of lawn bowls, bocce or pétanque on a flat bit of grass
  • Cycling bikes down linear park to the beach. Check your tires and pump them up at our bike maintenance stations along the way – for bike station information head to:
  • Play some family tennis
  • Visit the ducks - at West Lakes or Collins Reserve
  • Have a healthy picnic sitting under a tree or lying on the grass


  • Create an obstacle course at your local playground and see who can get through it the fastest.
  • If you’re up for a challenge, pretend the ground is lava and get from one side of the playground to another – using whatever you have around you
  • Try a ‘playground crawl’ by exploring a few new playgrounds and have the kids ‘review’ them and choose their favourite. Find a park with play equipment at
